Adamji Peerbhoy was born in the year 1846 at Dhoraji town in Kathiyawar in India in a very poor Dawoodi Bohra family of Qadir Bhai and Sakina Banu Peerbhoy. Adamji was honest, hardworking and above all very optimistic. At the age of 13 he came down to Bombay with his parents in search of livelihood with just Rs 5 in his pocket. The family members of Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy, the founder of the famous heritage toy train in the hill station of Matheran, have demanded that it be named after the businessman, reformist Philanthropist Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy had proposed a scheme to electrify Matheran, getting the sanctions to supply power at a price of roughly 2 annas a unit. The reformist is also credited with having started the popular Neral-Matheran railway. More than a century after reformist and philanthropist Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy’s efforts brought electricity to Matheran, a quaint hill station 90 km from Mumbai, his grandson has sought compensation for the Rs 1.39 lakh his grandfather spent on the electrification.

Hussain's plans for the railway were formulated in 1900 and construction started in 1904. The line was open to traffic by 1907.
